Frequently Asked Questions

Demand response is when participating customers reduce their electricity usage at critical times in order to help lower the demand for electricity during peak periods when energy use is at its highest, such as on certain hot summer days. The programs help reduce peak-day generator emissions, delay installation of costly utility equipment and can help reduce the purchase of expensive peak-day energy. Participating customers are eligible for incentives.

The incentives Rhode Island Energy pays are based on your performance on Peak Energy Events throughout the summer. Rhode Island Energy will not charge you a penalty if you cannot perform during a Peak Energy Event. However, the incentive Rhode Island Energy pays will be less.

This program is designed to reduce the demand on the electric system on the hottest summer days. Daily Dispatch is called on more often than Targeted Dispatch. However, for each option events are called between 3 pm and 8 pm in the summer. Please choose the option that works best for you.

Customers can reduce their energy consumption by turning off unnecessary lighting, appliances and equipment, and raising the temperature of central air-conditioning systems. The Curtailment Service Provider you select will work with you to determine which strategy fits your situation.

Notification is given the day before a Peak Energy Event takes place. Your curtailment service provider will work with you to determine how to inform of upcoming Peak Energy Events. Typical methods of contact are e-mail, text message, or telephone.

Load aggregators, curtailment service providers, and demand response service providers are all names for the same thing- organizations that advise and assist customers in participating in demand response programs.
