Building Data Portal features

Benchmarking buildings provides valuable data on energy consumption patterns, allowing property owners and managers to identify inefficiencies, track performance improvements over time, and implement targeted upgrades that reduce energy waste and operating costs. Our new tool helps you retrieve the aggregate whole building energy usage data of your single or multi-tenant commercial, residential, and industrial buildings and enables you to:

  • View and manage your portfolio of buildings
  • Create data requests for aggregated whole building data
  • Verify the units in the building(s)
  • Visualize whole building usage data
  • Determine whole building energy performance
  • Connect to and send/receive data with ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager®

Getting started

To sign up for Rhode Island Energy’s Building Data Portal, please download and complete the Enrollment form. To submit your form, see our "Uploading your forms" section.

Transfer a building

To transfer a recently acquired building to your Building Data Portal account, please fill out the Building Transfer form and upload via our secure upload portal by following the instructions below.

Tenant consent requirements

Requests for aggregated consumption data for buildings with three (3) or less individually metered accounts will require consent from each customer. Download our Energy Release form to proceed if your building does not meet the threshold requirements. Follow the secure upload instructions below to submit your energy release forms directly to our support team.

Uploading your forms

Use our secure file transfer portal to submit the form.

  1. Select “Upload” to attach your form (JPG, PDF, PNG, DOC, XSLX, and TIFF formats accepted)
  2. Type your email address in the "From" field
  3. Select “Building Data Portal” from the dropdown menu or type support@energyusage.rienergy.com in the “To” field
  4. Enter "Building Data Portal [Form Name]” in the “Subject” field
  5. Include your full legal name and building address in the “Message” field
  6. Select "Drop Files Off" to share your documents with Rhode Island Energy’s Building Data Portal Support team

Buildings in Providence

Providence, Rhode Island joins an increasing number of states and municipalities across the United States in establishing benchmarking programs to measure the energy performance of buildings. Providence’s Building Energy Reporting Ordinance currently requires large buildings over 50,000 gross square feet to report energy usage no later than May 15, 2025. Buildings between 20,000 and 49,999 gross square feet should report usage no later than May 15, 2026.
